What is Status: Code 4, Inc. (SC4i)?
SC4i is a Colorado 501(c)(3) nonprofit providing free, confidential mental health support to civilian and military first responders and their families, including law enforcement, fire, EMS, and dispatch.
What is PTSI?
PTSI (Posttraumatic Stress Injury) describes the psychological impact of repeated exposure to trauma on the job. SC4i uses “injury” rather than “disorder” to reflect that these are treatable responses to real events, not pre-existing conditions.
How common is PTSI among first responders?
Studies of first responders seeking counseling found rates of 38% for PTSD, 34% for depression, and roughly 40% for substance use disorder (Jacobowitz et al., 2025, NYS First Responder Mental Health Needs Assessment; Beauchamp et al., 2022, American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse).
Is SC4i's counseling really free?
Yes. Current and Former First Responders receive no bill for their sessions. SC4i has delivered more than 11,900 free counseling sessions to approximately 998 clients since 2017, representing $1.79 million in services.
Do I have to be in crisis to reach out?
No. SC4i works with first responders at any stage, from early stress and burnout to acute crisis. If you are in immediate danger, call or text 988.
Are sessions confidential?
Yes. Clinical services are confidential and reviewed only by the Clinical Supervisor, COO, and relevant clinical staff.
Does SC4i work with families, not just first responders?
Yes. Services include family and couples counseling, and resources built specifically for first responder families.
How do most people find out about SC4i?
Most new clients, 75%, come through peer referral, first responders recommending SC4i to colleagues based on their own experience.
What areas does SC4i serve?
SC4i is based in Colorado Springs and serves first responders statewide, with four Regional Peer Support Teams in El Paso, Teller, Park, and Douglas Counties.
